Old Dock Residence

West Falmouth, MA

Set on an acre and a half of upland coastal habitat, the master plan for this new shingle style house included a pool, pool house, walkways and kitchen terrace. While the materials for the project - fieldstone walls, privet hedges, native plantings - are consistent with those used throughout this historic coastal village, the use of strong lines and spatial delineation are part of a more contemporary vocabulary. Hedges are used to structure the site into 3 zones - the arrival area, the outside gathering areas that are an extension of the house, and the more private pool area. As one progresses from the less structured and more open arrival area to the more intimate spaces surrounding the house and pool, the hedges become taller and more continuous, providing a clear spatial ordering.
