Newport Residence

Situated on a rocky bluff overlooking a coastal pond, the steep grades and exposed ledge of this site presented a unique set of challenges and opportunity.

Stone walls were built from the rock removed during site excavation to conserve material and provide continuity between new walls and existing stone formations. Crisp, manicured lawn was brought right to the edge of rock outcroppings creating a sense of tension between the ordered and the natural that helps to emphasize the dramatic geology of the site.

Circulation through the site occurs along a series of walkways, stairs, paths and open lawn. Changes in materials, shifts between openess and enclosue, and the progression of distinct spatial entities all help to make this small property feel more extensive and varied.
