GROUNDWORKS

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

Harvard Science Center

Cambridge, MA

This renovation project involved the redesign of an existing courtyard and the addition of an accessible walkway at the Oxford Street entrance. Since the courtyard sits above an underground structure, green roof technology was required for plantings. Redbud trees create a sense of layering and an intermediate scale to a space that was dominated by the surrounding building. Broad steps on 3 sides of the raised platform provide additional seating as well as necessary retaining structure. A dense understory of lily-of-the-valley, bearberry, ferns and bulbs add texture and seasonal color.
