Chilmark Residence

Set high on the terminal moraine of Martha's Vineyard, this project emphasizes the unique quality of the glacial landscape. Existing glacial erratics have been incorporated as design elements while grading and sight lines underscore the dramatic contours of the terrain.

A strong continuity of spatial organization and materiality exists between interior and exterior spaces. The front entry boardwalk continues to be read in the wood flooring of the house and rear deck, evolving into a stone plank walkway leading to the pool. This north/south axis is a central spine connecting parking court, entry garden, house, and rear lawn. A granite retaining wall/walkway running the length of the rear lawn is the other main axis, providing both circulation and delineation. Throughout the site, the crisp lines of the house and pool areas are contrasted by the less ordered landscape of surrounding meadow and woodland.
